Indexed Universal Life Insurance
Indexed Universal Life (IUL) insurance is a versatile form of permanent life insurance that combines lifelong protection, cash value accumulation, and market-linked growth potential. An IUL policy can earn interest based on the performance of a market index, such as the S&P 500®, while providing a 0% floor on eligible indexed interest crediting strategies.
Unlike investing directly in the stock market, an IUL's cash value is not directly invested in the index. Instead, the index is used to determine how much interest may be credited to the policy, subject to the policy's cap, participation rate, and other provisions.
With IUL, your premiums help support the policy's death benefit and cash value. Over time, the cash value may grow on a tax-deferred basis and can potentially be accessed through policy loans or withdrawals, subject to the policy's terms.
Key Benefits of IUL
- Lifelong Coverage — IUL provides permanent life insurance protection as long as the policy remains in force and required premiums and charges are properly managed.
- Cash Value Growth Potential — Your policy can accumulate cash value through interest credited based on the performance of a selected market index, subject to the policy's crediting method, cap, participation rate, and other provisions.
- Market-Linked Growth with a 0% Floor — Eligible indexed crediting strategies may provide growth potential when the selected index performs positively, while a 0% floor generally prevents a negative index return from producing a negative indexed interest credit. However, policy charges and other factors can still reduce cash value.
- Tax-Deferred Growth — Cash value can grow on a tax-deferred basis, allowing interest to accumulate without current taxation on the credited interest. Under certain circumstances, policy loans and withdrawals may provide tax-advantaged access to cash value.
- Flexible Premiums — Many IUL policies offer flexibility in premium funding, allowing you to adjust how much you contribute within the policy's guidelines and requirements.
- Access to Cash Value — As cash value accumulates, you may be able to access it through policy loans or withdrawals for retirement income, emergencies, business opportunities, education, or other financial needs.
IUL Death Benefit Options
One of the important decisions when designing an IUL policy is choosing how the death benefit is structured. Depending on the insurance carrier and policy, you may have the option of choosing between Option A (Level Death Benefit) and Option B (Increasing Death Benefit).
Option A — Level Death Benefit: Provides a generally level death benefit while cash value grows. As cash value increases, the amount of insurance may adjust so the total death benefit generally remains level.
Option B — Increasing Death Benefit: Generally combines the policy's specified amount of insurance with accumulated cash value, allowing the total death benefit to increase as cash value grows.
Choosing the Right Death Benefit Option
The choice between Option A and Option B can affect your policy's cost structure, cash value accumulation, funding requirements, and long-term performance.
The best option depends on your age, financial goals, desired death benefit, premium strategy, and long-term objectives.
